10:15-11:00 – Mike Anderson | Feature

Mike Anderson, founding member of POC in play, is a producer at ustwo and was a developer on the multi-award-winning Monument Valley games. Mike steps up to the AdventureX lectern to share insights from the upcoming Desta: a character-driven rogue-like telling stories through turn-based combat.


11:00-11:30 – James Chew | Talk | Desire in Failbetter’s Mask of the Rose

James Chew discusses designing for desire in Mask of the Rose. The senior writer at Failbetter Games will focus on super-responsive conversations, the modelling of consent and (of course) and kissing monsters, in the upcoming Fallen London romance.


12:00-12:30 – Velvet Spors & Imo Kaufman | Talk | Games and Self-Care: how games can support us to make sense of ourselves

Mental health and games have a complicated history. From toxic communities to therapeutic virtual reality experiences, we find ourselves in a vibrant, chaotic and exciting space.

Spors and Kaufman discuss design opportunities for developers: showcasing how regular, off-the-shelf games are “re-framed” for self-care; and how people use narrative games to explore and make sense if their mental health.


12:30-13:00 – Joannes Truyens | Talk | Your Community Will Save You

Neurocracy is an alternate reality hypertext fiction game explored through a Wikipedia-like website called Omnipedia. As a solo dev, Joannes Truyens discusses developing the game’s episodic narrative through audience interaction, with a community of players joining hands to solve the game’s murder mystery.


2:00-3:00 – Dave Gilbert | Feature

Wadjet Eye’s Old Skies has gone from being an experimental jam game to a fully fledged time travel point-and-click. Indie powerhouse Dave Gilbert (Unavowed) returns to AdventureX to share an insight into the development process.


3:15-3:45 – Charlene Putney & Martin Pichlmair | Talk | Curiosity Multiplied The Cat: Five Writing Experiments To Try At Home

Artificial intelligence and procedural generation are becoming more mainstream by the day. In this talk, Putney (Baldur’s Gate 3) and Pichlmair (Vitriol) showcase five experiments developers you can try at home, including crafting something together — live!


3:45-4:15 – Andrew Oliver | Talk | Characters that Listen & Respond

Interactive Adventures are all about choice and we’ve relied too long on text and buttons. Andrew Oliver, one half of the legendary Oliver Twins (Treasure Island Dizzy), introduces Panivox’s RichCast, a player, toolset and platform for Interactive voice-driven stories. In this session, Andrew discusses the challenges and solutions for creating ‘talkies’, where designers and writers can truly place the players at the centre of their interactive conversational adventures.


4:45-5:30 – The Adventurers’ Tavern | Panel

AdventureX favourites Jon Ingold (Heaven’s Vault), Chella Ramanan (Before I Forget), Francisco González (Lamplight City) and Jade Leamcharaskul (Wide Ocean Big Jacket) return to share some of their best (and worst) takes on the state of narrative games in 2022. Pull up a seat and join them in the Adventurers’ Tavern.
